We all plan for the future, but what about planning for when we're gone? None of us like to think about death or disability but planning now can make it easier for friends and family to make sure your wishes are carried out.
Benefits of planning your estate
- You can specify what you want to happen to your assets.
- Pick your funeral arrangements.
- Appoint guardians for your children.
- Provide for any friends, charities or other organisations.
- Choose someone you trust to be your executor (to deal with your estate after your death).
- Choose someone you trust, in advance, to be your Attorney to make decisions for you should you become unable to do so.
Why make a Will?
Making a Will means you can detail what you want to happen with your estate (money, property, jewellery etc) after you've gone. This is especially important if you own a property, are married or have children. By making a Will there are clear instructions on what you want to happen.
Should I consider Lasting Power of Attorney?
We all expect to be able to make our own decisions, but what if one day you can't due to illness, age or an accident? A Lasting Power of Attorney lets you appoint one or more people you trust, in advance, to make key decisions for you, such as financial, medical and care matters. Without a Lasting Power of Attorney in place your family and/or friends would have to go to the Court of Protection for a Deputy to be appointed, with possible cost implications. By making sure you have a Lasting Power of Attorney before you need it, you can be reassured that one or more of your chosen people can make key decisions for you.
